Scoliosis Surgery

Surgery is the only known method which substantially corrects the curve. It is a complex surgery lasting several hours. The most frequently performed surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis involves posterior spinal fusion - in this surgery a metal rod is attached to each side of the spine. Then, the spine is fused with a piece of bone from the patient's hip. The bone grows in between the vertebrae and holds them together and straight.

I found this informal guide to spinal surgery from a point of view of parents.
Very accessible and full of useful information:

An essay-like journal of surgery patient can be found here: www.espine.com/Scoliosis-case-review/scoliosis-journal.pdf

I strongly recommend to read the blogs listed on this website for more information about scoliosis surgery experience
